Direct University Pathways

SJMHS to Fresno State Direct Pathway Program

SJMHS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with California State University, Fresno (Fresno State).

Under this partnership, the SJMHS to Fresno State Direct Pathway Program offers international students the unique opportunity to gain acceptance to Fresno State by fulfilling the following requirements:

  1. Receive an SJMHS Diploma
  2. Graduate with a cumulative 3.0 GPA or equivalent
  3. English Language Requirement:
    • Students who have completed 3 or more years at SJMHS fulfill the English Language Requirement. No standardized test score necessary.
    • Students who have completed 2 years at SJMHS will need to provide an additional standardized test score

International Students who study at SJMHS have a direct pathway of acceptance into a major California State University by fulfilling admission requirements only applicable to SJMHS graduates.

Under this partnership, the SJMHS to Fresno Pacific University Direct Pathway Program offers international students the unique opportunity to gain acceptance to Fresno State by fulfilling the following requirements:

  1. Receive an SJMHS Diploma
  2. Graduate with a cumulative 3.1 GPA or equivalent
  3. English Language Requirement:
    • Students who have completed 3 or more years at SJMHS fulfill the English Language Requirement. No standardized test score necessary.
    • Students who have completed 2 years at SJMHS will need to provide an additional standardized test score

International Students who study at SJMHS have a direct pathway of acceptance into Fresno Pacific University by fulfilling admission requirements only applicable to SJMHS graduates.

School-Year Program

SJMHS offers college preparatory instruction to students in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. Students who complete grade 12 graduate and are awarded a high school diploma.

International students are an integral part of the SJMHS community and are in the same academic classes with domestic students. All students are matched with an experienced guidance counselor on their first day of school. Students have access to sports facilities, iPad resources as well as a myriad of social events available in a private, top-notch, faith-based high school education.

Here are highlights of the SJMHS School-Year Program:

Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors Courses: 

AP and Honors courses are part of a rigorous SJMHS academic curriculum. AP courses prepare students to take AP exams in May. Students with an acceptable AP exam score may receive college credit

1-to-1 iPad Program:

All students receive an iPad at the start of the school year. SJMHS integrates state-of-the-art technology in the curriculum providing an organized note-taking platform, online research tool and learning management system.  SJMHS faculty and staff receive training from Apple Distinguished Educators.

Academic Guidance:

Beginning Freshman year, SJMHS offers a comprehensive counseling program for students with college planning, readiness and standardized test preparation.

Graduation Requirements:

SJMHS graduation requirements are fully aligned with the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) entrance requirements. Students are always encouraged to supplement basic minimum requirements with additional electives.

PowerSchoolTM:

PowerSchool is a web-based student information system. All SJMHS parents can view attendance, assignments and test grades from anywhere in the world with a desktop, tablet or mobile phone.

Admissions Requirements

For School-Year Programs, SJMHS receives international student applications on a rolling basis throughout the school year.

1. All international students must provide:

  • Completed online application submission
  • Official transcripts for previous two grade levels
  • Standardized test score
  • Translated immunization records

2. Admissions Interview

Students are interviewed by SJMHS via video conferencing

3. Admissions Decision

If admitted, an acceptance letter will be sent to the student. The student must provide the following to SJMHS before arriving to the United States:

  • Proof of health insurance in the United State
  • Verification of courses in progress

ESL Programs

SJMHS is proud to partner with California State University, Fresno (Fresno State) to provide innovative and insightful ESL programs geared to prepare international students for real-world English usage and acculturation education.

 

ESL Orientation Program

All new SJMHS students participate in a ten-day ESL Orientation Program hosted by California State University, Fresno (Fresno State) before the official start of the Fall semester. Students receive ESL instruction covering tasks with Dictation, Listening Comprehension, Partnered and Group Work, Reading and Writing. Students are also introduced to cultural acclimation topics with various activities and discussions with current Fresno State students and staff.

Course Objectives:

  • Listening Skill improvement with increasing attention to listening difficulties, engaging in active listening, experimenting with listening strategies, and using critical thinking skills.
  • Understanding U.S. academic anti-plagiarism standards by applying citation techniques.
  • Reading Fluency and Autonomy improvement by measuring reading rates, applying reading strategies, and monitoring progress toward reading fluency goals.
  • Cultural Acclimation by comparing and contrasting social, cultural, and academic differences between their home country and the U.S. through activities and discussions.

ESL Theatre Program

All international SJMHS students will receive ESL instruction from the Linguistics Department of Fresno State. This is an after-school program that meets twice per week on the SJMHS campus.

This innovative program allows students to develop English language skills through an interactive approach to language teaching. Students will practice verbal and nonverbal language skills such as gesture, voice projection, intonation and body language through improvisation games and role-play in a safe environment to strengthen these skills. Students will build language fluency and confidence by learning to simulate authentic situations.

The ESL curriculum is specifically designed by Fresno State’s Linguistic Department for San Joaquin Memorial High School students.

Summer Programs

SJMHS is pleased to offer two summer programs where on-campus dormitory accommodations and meals are provided. Round-trip Airport Transfer Service from Fresno Yosemite International Airport is included. Each program is two-weeks in length.

University Summer Tours

International students are chartered to well-known universities in California including Stanford University, UC Berkeley, UCLA, University of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, California Institute of Technology, University of Southern California, Pepperdine University and California State University, Fresno.

Students gain valuable insight of American university with campus visits. Exciting sightseeing opportunities to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Yosemite National Park, Monterey and Santa Monica are provided. College preparatory readiness advice from SJMSH Guidance Counselors is included and ESL instruction is available at no additional cost.

 

Summer Sports! Program

Students receive ESL instruction and practice English on the field with sports! Top-notch coaching from sports staff is available for Soccer, Baseball, Basketball, Flag Football, Water Polo, Volleyball and Golf.

Students are provided with SJMHS-branded jersey, t-shirt and hat at the start of the program. Weekend excursions to local shopping malls and movie theatres are also included.
